'Calderdale' the real Happy Valley
BBC1 Happy Valley
Halovue Aerial Photography was part of a team of drone operators commissioned to film season 3 of the BBC smash hit drama Happy Valley, however only Phil Fearnley and his drone team actually live in this stunning location.
After filming with renowned writer Sally Wainwright, who also went to the same school as Phil, on both season one and two of the BBC / HBO drama Gentleman Jack, also set in Calderdale it was a great honour to fly the drones for Sally and the team at Lookout Point productions.
Phil also had the pleasure of having one of the filming locations right on his doorstep in Ripponden making his trip to the flying locations the shortest he’s ever had. As well as this his home was also used as the green room for several cast members including Catherine Cawed played by Sara Lancashire, Joanna Hepworth played by Mollie Winnard, Faisal Bhatti played by Amit Shah and the Poppy and Florence the Hepworth children.
So when Phil wasn’t flying you could find him making cups of tea for the stars, making this a very Happy Valley.

Hebden Bridge — A Favourite for Film and TV Productions
Located in the heart of Calderdale, Hebden Bridge is a picturesque Yorkshire town that attracts visitors from across the UK and around the world. Its unique charm, cobbled streets, and dramatic valley setting have made it a favourite filming location for major film and TV productions.
The town has featured in acclaimed series such as the BBC’s Happy Valley, Ackley Bridge, and Last Tango in Halifax, as well as numerous independent films and documentaries. Its instantly recognisable landscape continues to draw production teams looking for authentic Northern character and cinematic backdrops.
The Piece Hall — Halifax’s Iconic Landmark
The Piece Hall is a Grade I listed building that has stood proudly at the heart of Halifax since 1779. Originally built as a cloth hall for trading handwoven textiles, it’s now one of Yorkshire’s most unique heritage locations, home to independent shops, wine bars, and restaurants.
Beyond its history, The Piece Hall has become a stunning film and TV location. It regularly hosts large public events and live outdoor concerts, and in recent years has appeared on screen in major productions — including Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”, “Brassed Off”, and “Rita, Sue and Bob Too.”
With its grand architecture and cinematic scale, The Piece Hall continues to attract filmmakers looking for authentic period backdrops and atmospheric aerial views.
Wainhouse Tower — A Landmark Above Halifax
Wainhouse Tower, located in the parish of King Cross on the south-west side of Halifax, is one of West Yorkshire’s most recognisable landmarks. Standing at 275 feet, it’s not only the tallest structure in Calderdale but also the tallest folly in the world — completed between 1871 and 1875.
This striking tower has become an iconic feature of the Calderdale skyline and a favourite for filmmakers and photographers alike. It has appeared in numerous TV productions, most notably in the opening titles of the BBC drama Happy Valley (Season Two), where its dramatic presence perfectly captured the essence of the region.
Shibden Hall — Historic Home of Gentleman Jack
Shibden Hall is a Grade II* listed historic house set within beautiful parkland in Shibden, West Yorkshire. Originally built in the 15th century, it has been carefully modified by generations of residents, but its Tudor half-timbered frontage remains its most distinctive feature.
One of its most famous residents was Anne Lister, who inherited the hall from her family. Her personal diaries — which documented her life and relationships in remarkable detail — inspired the acclaimed BBC/HBO drama Gentleman Jack, filmed on location at Shibden Hall.
Phil Fearnley and the Halo Vue drone team were proud to provide the aerial filming for both series one and two of Gentleman Jack, capturing the estate’s dramatic architecture and surrounding Calderdale landscapes from the air.
Today, Shibden Hall and the wider Calderdale area have become must-visit destinations for film crews, heritage lovers, and fans of the series alike.
