Led by Phil Fearnley — a drone cinematographer with over 13 years of professional experience and more than 9,200 logged flights — Halo Vue provides CAA PDRA-01 authorised drone operations for national and regional broadcasters across England.
Unlike many drone operators, Halo Vue holds full broadcaster approvals from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Netflix, and Sky — making us one of a small number of independent operators pre-approved to fly on productions for major UK and international networks. Our established relationships with major broadcasters help streamline the commissioning process, giving production teams confidence in our experience, documentation and professional approach from the very first call.
What is News Drone Filming?
News drone filming is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to capture aerial footage for broadcast journalism, press photography, and live television coverage. Drone operators work alongside news crews, broadcast trucks, and satellite uplink teams to deliver aerial perspective on breaking stories — from flood events and major incidents to public gatherings, infrastructure stories, and environmental reporting.
At Halo Vue, every news drone deployment is carefully planned and carried out in accordance with CAA regulations. We conduct thorough airspace checks, obtain necessary permissions and coordinate with relevant authorities where required. All operations are supported by £5 million public liability insurance and our CAA Operational Authorisation.
Drone Filming vs News Helicopter — What's the Difference?
Traditional news helicopters offer range and speed but come with significant cost, noise, and logistical overhead. Drone filming for news offers several advantages in appropriate scenarios: rapid ground deployment, operation in areas where helicopters cannot safely hover at low altitude, the ability to film close to structures and infrastructure, and a live HDMI or SDI feed from the drone’s remote controller for satellite truck connection. For many breaking news stories, a broadcast-grade drone crew on the ground can be operational faster than a helicopter can be scrambled.

Each aircraft in our fleet is maintained to manufacturer specifications, logged through Airdata UAV flight management software, and regularly inspected to ensure operational reliability in time-critical deployments.
DJI Mini 5 Pro — Rapid Response Aerial
The DJI Mini 5 Pro is our primary rapid-response aircraft for news deployment. Sub-250g and highly portable, it can be airborne within minutes of arrival on scene. Despite its compact size, it delivers impressive 4K image quality suitable for broadcast use in standard news packages and social media content. Its small footprint makes it ideal for congested urban environments where larger aircraft cannot safely operate.
DJI Mavic 4 Pro — Broadcast Zoom & Endurance
The DJI Mavic 4 Pro provides longer endurance flights, a versatile multi-lens camera system, and exceptional optical zoom capability — allowing the operator to maintain safe distance from an incident while capturing close, detailed footage. The Mavic 4 Pro is our preferred aircraft for extended news coverage events, press days, and live event broadcasting where flight time is critical.
DJI Inspire 2 X7 — Full Broadcast Quality
For live events requiring the highest broadcast specification, the DJI Inspire 2 with Super 35mm X7 camera delivers footage that rivals traditional news helicopter cameras. With raw capture capability and an SDI output on its remote controller, the Inspire 2 can feed a satellite uplink truck or LiveU unit for real-time live transmission — making it the choice for major national broadcast events.
Live Transmission Capability
Live pictures are taken from each drone’s remote controller: the HDMI port on our DJI Mavic and Mini series, or the SDI port on the DJI Inspire 2. That feed connects to LiveU portable uplink units, satellite trucks and broadcast infrastructure. This allows live aerial footage to be transmitted to broadcast facilities in real time, with no post-production delay — essential for breaking news, live sports events, and national broadcast coverage.

How quickly can Halo Vue deploy for breaking news?
Depending on location relative to our base in West Yorkshire, we can typically be on site within 1–2 hours across most of Northern England. For Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, and surrounding areas, response times can be significantly shorter. We carry go-bags for rapid deployment and can begin pre-flight checks immediately on arrival.
Do you hold broadcaster approvals for news work?
Yes. Halo Vue holds full broadcaster approval from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Netflix, and Sky — meaning we can be commissioned directly by production companies and broadcast teams without additional supplier vetting. This approval process is rigorous and covers insurance, CAA authorisation, operational procedures, and safety management.
Can you film at breaking news and major incidents?
Yes. Halo Vue provides professional drone filming for breaking news, major incidents and live broadcast coverage. Every deployment is assessed individually, taking into account airspace restrictions, public safety, location permissions and operational requirements. We work closely with broadcasters, emergency services and relevant authorities where necessary to ensure filming is conducted safely and legally.
Can you deliver footage for same-day broadcast?
Yes. Raw footage can be transferred immediately on landing via high-speed file transfer, and edited packages can be turned around for same-day inclusion in broadcast news programmes. For live events, we can feed footage directly into your broadcast infrastructure in real time via the HDMI or SDI output on the drone’s remote controller, into LiveU or a satellite uplink.
What insurance do you carry?
Halo Vue carries £5 million public liability insurance through Moonrock/Hiscox, valid until May 2027. Full insurance documentation is available on request and is already on file with all major UK broadcasters as part of our supplier approval status.
Do you work with regional and local news teams?
Yes. Alongside national broadcaster work, Halo Vue regularly supports regional news teams, local press, and independent journalists. We understand the tight deadlines and budget constraints of regional news and offer flexible commission arrangements. Previous regional news work includes coverage for ITN, BBC regional news, and national press titles.
