A Perfect Setting for High-Energy FPV Filming
Just outside Sheffield, Grenoside Woods is one of Yorkshire's recognised mountain biking destinations — home to the famous Steel City downhill trail and closely associated with mountain biking legend Steve Peat.
For FPV drone filming, it's a brilliant environment. Fast-moving riders, twisting woodland trails and changing terrain create opportunities for immersive tracking shots and perspectives that conventional aerial filming can't easily achieve.
From mountain biking and motorsport to commercials and creative media productions, FPV filming offers a different way to capture movement and tell a story.

Creating Controlled
Chaos for Television
How a creative brief from director Tom Levinge became an aerial hyperlapse capturing the energy and passing of time in Bradford city centre.
When the Brief Calls for Chaos
Not every aerial shot is about sweeping landscapes and beautiful establishing views. Sometimes, the job is to create something completely different.
While filming in Bradford for Rosie Jones's television series Trip Hazard, director Tom Levinge wanted something quite specific — chaotic images of the city that would visually communicate the passing of time.
The solution was an aerial hyperlapse.
By combining controlled drone movement with time-lapse photography, Phil Fearnley captured the changing light, traffic and activity of Bradford city centre, creating a fast-moving sequence with a real sense of energy.
The creative challenge wasn't simply to capture attractive aerial footage. It was to produce something that served the director's vision and contributed to the visual storytelling of the programme.
This is how Halo Vue approaches television and media production. We start by understanding what the director wants to achieve, then work out the best creative and technical approach to deliver it.
The brief comes first. The drone is just the tool.
"Phil was a joy to work with and was the life and soul of the crew. Would work with him again in a heartbeat."
"Phil is my go to drone guy. We've collaborated on a variety of travel programmes including Hold the front Page and Rosie Jones Trip Hazard, filming from FPV action sequences to beautiful sunset timelapses. Creative, independent, always giving me amazing extra shots and on top of that he's a lovely friendly guy too. Looking forward to working with him again on my next show"

Drone Filming for Gentleman Jack Across Yorkshire
Gentleman Jack is one of Yorkshire's best-known television dramas, and Halo Vue was proud to provide aerial filming for the production. From Bradford's Little Germany to Halifax, Shibden Hall and the streets around Wainhouse Tower in Calderdale, this was a project deeply connected to Yorkshire's landscape, architecture and identity.
For a period drama like Gentleman Jack, drone cinematography needs more than just beautiful aerials. It needs precision, sensitivity and a strong understanding of place — revealing scale, atmosphere and geography without breaking the authenticity of the world on screen.
Yorkshire made that possible. Within a few miles of each other sit historic streets, landmark buildings and open Pennine landscape — a rare variety that made the county an ideal setting for the series.
Featured Film — Gentleman Jack
This featured film brings together aerial footage and behind-the-scenes moments from the Gentleman Jack production, showing how drone filming helped capture the scale, atmosphere and distinctive Yorkshire setting of the series.
A Yorkshire Story Brought to Life on Screen
Starring Suranne Jones as the remarkable Anne Lister, Gentleman Jack is a BBC/HBO period drama created and written by Yorkshire-born screenwriter Sally Wainwright, also known for Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax.
Set in 1830s Yorkshire, the series tells the extraordinary true story of Anne Lister, a pioneering landowner, businesswoman and diarist who lived at Shibden Hall near Halifax. Drawing on Lister's extensive personal diaries, the programme brought her fascinating life and unconventional relationships to an international television audience.
For Sally Wainwright, the story was particularly personal. Having grown up close to Shibden Hall, she was bringing a remarkable piece of her own region's history to the screen.
Much of Gentleman Jack was filmed across Yorkshire, including Shibden Hall, Halifax town centre, Bradford's historic Little Germany and locations around Wainhouse Tower in Calderdale.
For Halo Vue founder Phil Fearnley, another Yorkshire-born creative, working on Gentleman Jack meant helping to capture the landscape, architecture and atmosphere of a region he knows so well.
The Yorkshire Locations Behind Gentleman Jack
From Bradford's historic Little Germany to Shibden Hall, Halifax, Leeds and York, Gentleman Jack brought together some of Yorkshire's most distinctive filming locations.
For Halo Vue founder Phil Fearnley, working across these locations meant helping capture the character, architecture and atmosphere of the region while meeting the creative demands of a major BBC/HBO drama production.
Little Germany · Bradford
Bradford's historic merchant quarter, with its remarkable Victorian architecture and distinctive streets, provided an atmospheric setting for the period drama.
Shibden Hall · Halifax
The historic home of Anne Lister and the heart of the Gentleman Jack story, surrounded by the landscapes of Calderdale.
York
York's remarkable historic architecture and streetscapes provided another authentic Yorkshire setting for the production.
Halifax · Calderdale
Halifax's stone-built streets and historic buildings helped bring the world of Anne Lister and nineteenth-century Yorkshire to life.
Leeds · West Yorkshire
Leeds added another dimension to the production's Yorkshire locations, with its distinctive architecture and urban character.
Halifax from Above
An aerial perspective of Halifax, revealing the town's historic character and its setting within the surrounding Calderdale landscape.
Trusted Close to Cast and Camera
On a period drama, trust and control are everything — especially when flying close to cast, costume and carefully designed locations.
Cinematographer Matt Gray BSC describes how Phil flew the Inspire 2 low, slow and very close to Suranne Jones in the opening scene of Gentleman Jack — exactly the precise, confident flying a BBC/HBO drama demands.
"On Gentleman Jack we had Halo Vue who are a local drone company and Phil, who did a brilliant job. It was interesting to see somewhere like Shibden Hall as it's quite difficult to describe as a location from the ground."
Behind the Scenes on Gentleman Jack
Working on set meant flying carefully in historic environments, fitting around the camera department's schedule and collaborating closely with the wider production team to get each shot without disrupting the day.

📞More Than a Filming Location. It's Home.
There's something special about filming Yorkshire from above. It's a county of incredible contrasts, where dramatic landscapes, historic towns, bustling cities and miles of spectacular coastline all sit within one remarkable region.
From the rugged cliffs and fishing harbour of Whitby to the historic streets of York, the maritime heritage of Hull and the sweeping landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, there's no shortage of extraordinary places to point a camera.
Travel inland and the scenery changes again. Leeds and Sheffield offer busy city centres, impressive architecture and modern urban landscapes, while Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield reveal Yorkshire's industrial past through grand Victorian buildings, old mills, canals and distinctive stone-built streets.
Head out into the countryside around Calderdale, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, and you're surrounded by rolling hills, deep valleys, reservoirs, traditional villages and remote moorland that can feel a world away from the cities.
For television producers, documentary makers and commercial directors, that variety creates remarkable opportunities. Within Yorkshire, it's possible to capture everything from dramatic natural landscapes and historic architecture to contemporary city life, rural communities and working industrial environments.
And for aerial filming, Yorkshire looks even more extraordinary from above.
A Lifetime of Knowing Yorkshire
For Phil Fearnley, Yorkshire isn't simply somewhere he works. It's where he was born, where he grew up and where he's spent much of his life exploring with a camera.
Over more than 13 years of professional drone filming, he's captured Yorkshire's landscapes, towns, villages and historic locations from perspectives that reveal their scale and character in completely different ways.
From the cobbled streets of Bradford and Halifax to the hills above Huddersfield, the reservoirs of the Pennines and the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, Phil has developed a genuine understanding of the region and what makes it so visually distinctive.
That local knowledge goes beyond knowing where places are. It's about recognising which locations might work for a particular shot, understanding how the landscape changes with the seasons, knowing where the light falls and appreciating the practical challenges of filming in different environments.
For visiting television crews and production companies, having somebody local who understands the region can make a real difference.
Phil doesn't just know how to fly a drone in Yorkshire. He knows Yorkshire.
One Region. Endless Creative Possibilities.
Coastline, Moorland and the Yorkshire Dales
From Whitby's harbour and the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline to the valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire's natural landscapes offer an extraordinary range of possibilities for aerial cinematography.
The rugged Pennines, open moorlands, winding rivers and vast reservoirs provide beautiful settings for factual television, wildlife and countryside programmes, travel documentaries, tourism campaigns and commercial productions.
Whether it's an atmospheric sunrise over the hills, a sweeping reveal across a valley or a coastal shot capturing the relationship between land and sea, the opportunities are almost endless.
Historic Yorkshire — Towns, Villages and Architecture
Yorkshire's history is written into its buildings and streets.
York's medieval architecture, Bradford's Little Germany, Halifax's Piece Hall, the historic mills around Huddersfield and the traditional villages scattered across the Dales all offer distinctive visual character.
For period drama, documentary filmmaking and factual television, these places provide a genuine sense of history and identity.
Aerial filming can reveal the scale of historic buildings, the layout of towns and the relationship between architecture and the surrounding landscape.
Modern Yorkshire — Cities, Industry and Maritime Heritage
Yorkshire isn't just rolling hills and pretty villages.
Leeds and Sheffield are major urban centres, offering contemporary architecture, busy streets, sporting venues and industrial landscapes.
Bradford combines a remarkable architectural heritage with a modern, culturally diverse cityscape, while Hull brings an entirely different dimension through its docks, maritime history and connection to the Humber.
From dramatic city-centre hyperlapses to establishing shots of industrial sites, sporting venues, harbours and transport infrastructure, modern Yorkshire provides plenty of opportunities for creative aerial filming.
Local Knowledge. Real Production Experience.
Filming across Yorkshire comes with its own challenges. Busy urban airspace, historic locations, remote countryside, public access, landowner permissions and unpredictable northern weather all need careful consideration.
Having worked across the region for years, Phil understands the importance of planning ahead, assessing each location and working closely with production teams to achieve the shots they need.
That experience has taken him onto productions including Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley, The Yorkshire Vet, Canal Boat Diaries, Countryfile and Springtime on the Farm, alongside work with Yorkshire production companies such as Daisybeck Studios, Air TV and Screenhouse.
Whether it's a single-camera documentary crew, a returning television series, a commercial production or a visiting media company unfamiliar with the region, Halo Vue brings local knowledge, broadcast experience and a practical approach to every shoot.
Yorkshire provides the locations. Phil brings the experience to capture them.
