Phil Fearnley: Yorkshire’s Eye in the Sky
The drone cinematographer behind Halo Vue Aerial Photography. Born in Yorkshire, based in the Calder Valley, and the aerial unit behind some of the best-loved shows ever filmed in God’s Own Country.
You’ve almost certainly seen Phil Fearnley’s work. You just didn’t know it was him. The sweep over Shibden Hall. The long glide down the Calder Valley. The narrowboat crawling along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at four miles an hour.
From the Family Studio to the Yorkshire Skies
Phil learned his craft the old-fashioned way: in the family photography studio, long before anyone had heard of a drone.
He opened his own studio in the late 1990s, went digital early, and spent the best part of three decades learning what makes a picture work: light, composition, timing, and the patience to wait for all three to line up. That photographer’s eye is still the thing producers notice first.
When drones arrived, Phil was an early adopter, seeing straight away what they could do for television. Some of Halo Vue’s earliest shoots were for BBC One’s DIY SOS, flown before drones were industry standard. More than 13 years and over 9,000 flights later, Halo Vue is the aerial unit Yorkshire’s producers keep bringing back.
Home is Ripponden, in the Calder Valley: Happy Valley country, Gentleman Jack country, the heart of West Yorkshire. It’s a short drive to Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Huddersfield, Bradford and Leeds, 30 minutes from ITV Studios in Leeds and 45 minutes from MediaCityUK in Salford.
That local knowledge is worth more than any spec sheet. Phil knows which way the light falls on Stoodley Pike at sunset, where the wind funnels down the valleys, which landowner to ring, and how long it really takes to get from the Dales to the city centre on a Monday morning.

Eight Series of Canal Boat Diaries, Now Home in Yorkshire
For eight series Phil has been the drone pilot on Canal Boat Diaries with Robbie Cumming, first on BBC Four and now on U&Yesterday.
Three people, one narrowboat, a backpack of drones and a power station to keep them flying off grid. Series 7 finished at Sowerby Bridge, just down the road from Phil’s front door. Series 8 brings the Naughty Lass right through the heart of Yorkshire: the Calder and Hebble, the Huddersfield Broad Canal, the Aire and Calder and the Leeds and Liverpool, past Saltaire, Bingley, Silsden and Skipton.
It’s also the show strangers stop Phil to talk about, usually because they’ve seen Robbie fall in the canal on Gogglebox. Nothing is staged, but the cameras never stop rolling.

The Calder Valley is home, but the work goes wherever the story is: across the UK, into Europe, and onto some of the biggest shows on television.
In summer 2026 Halo Vue filmed for America’s Got Talent, and was the aerial unit on a new Disney+ documentary. Before that came Rosie Jones’s Trip Hazard for Channel 4, Hold the Front Page for Sky Max, Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose for Netflix, Traffic Cops and Biker Cops: Elite Squad One for Channel 5, and eight Channel 5 prison documentaries for Good TV, from HMP Wakefield and Full Sutton to Belmarsh.
Add Countryfile, The One Show, Vera, Wild Bill and the Bollywood feature Commando 3, and you get a credit list that runs from Sunday-night drama to live news. Every credit is listed on IMDb.
Alongside the drones, Phil is still a photographer at heart. He shoots on-set publicity and behind-the-scenes stills for productions, and through Unreal Visuals he uses AI to transform real footage and photography into new possibilities, starting from the real thing.
Calm, Quick, and Quietly Brilliant
Producers don’t rebook a drone pilot for the kit. They rebook the person who makes their day easier.
Phil arrives with the paperwork done: CAA PDRA-01 Operational Authorisation, risk assessments, landowner permissions, and £5 million public liability insurance, which can be raised to £10 million on request. He knows the Yorkshire airspace inside out, including the Leeds Bradford Flight Restriction Zone, prisons and other no-fly areas, so permissions are sorted before the crew arrives.
On the day he works as a solo pilot and camera operator, or as a two-person crew with a dedicated drone camera operator for drama and complex sequences. He brings ground-based Ronin 4D filming and FPV for the fast, low, immersive shots, and keeps everything powered off grid with portable power stations. A small footprint, no fuss, and the shot you were hoping for, plus a few you weren’t expecting.
