Bollywood Movie Commando 3
Our first Bollywood movie: drone filming of car chases and stunt action sequences around Bradford, West Yorkshire
Play filmFilmed in and around Bradford
Commando 3 was filmed in and around Bradford and included many complicated stunt scenes.
Our drone filming team included a Drone Pilot, dedicated camera operator and remote focus puller.
Aerial filming required special permission from the Bradford Film office who managed to close the whole of the city centre for several drone filming sequences.
The drone filming on this occasion was filmed using the DJI Inspire 2 with the X7 super 35mm camera shooting ProRes in D-Log.
Car chases through the streets of Bradford
We filmed the car chases around Bradford, West Yorkshire, with the city centre closed to traffic so the stunt drivers and the drone had the streets to themselves.
Commando 3 was our first Bollywood movie, and it arrived on our own doorstep. Bradford is a short drive from our base in West Yorkshire, and for this shoot its Victorian streets became the backdrop for a full-scale action film.
The car chases were the heart of our work. Stunt drivers threw the cars through the city centre at speed while the drone tracked them from above and alongside, low between the stone buildings and then climbing to show the whole chase unfolding through the streets.
None of it is possible without the roads. The Bradford Film Office arranged the closures, clearing the city centre so the stunt team could drive flat out and we could fly directly over streets that would normally be full of traffic and people.
With a three-person drone crew, the pilot could concentrate on flying the line of the chase, the camera operator on framing the cars, and the focus puller on keeping fast-moving vehicles sharp on a Super 35 cinema camera.
Car stunts, machine guns, smoke and martial arts
We also filmed the stunt action scene around a Bradford hotel, one of the biggest set pieces we have been part of.
The second part of our shoot was a stunt action scene staged around a Bradford hotel. It had everything: crazy car stunts, fake machine guns, smoke drifting across the set and martial arts fight sequences, all happening at once.
For a drone crew that means working as one part of a very large machine. The stunt team, the special effects crew and the camera department all have their own timings, and the drone has to hit its mark on every take without getting in anyone’s way.
We flew wide to show the scale of the action around the hotel, then came in lower and closer for the cars and the fights, with the smoke giving the pictures real depth and atmosphere.
Every flight was briefed with the stunt co-ordinators first. Where the cars would go, where the performers would be and where the effects would fire were all agreed before the drone left the ground.
Commando 3: a Bollywood action film made in Yorkshire
The third film in the Commando series, starring Vidyut Jammwal and directed by Aditya Datt.
Commando 3 is the third film in the Commando series, following Commando in 2013 and Commando 2 in 2017. It was produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah with Reliance Entertainment, Sunshine Pictures and Motion Picture Capital, and released in cinemas on 29 November 2019.
Vidyut Jammwal returns as commando Karanveer Singh Dogra, sent undercover to England to stop a planned terrorist attack on India. Jammwal is a trained martial artist who is known for performing his own stunts, which is why the fight scenes in the series look the way they do.
The story is set in London, but a large part of the film was shot in Yorkshire, in Bradford and in York, with filming starting in September 2018.
The action earned the film’s stunt team a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Action, and Commando 3 became the highest-grossing film in the series.
